Katahdin Boy: Another Record Setter

The summer of speed continues at The Downs as Katahdin Boy becomes the fastest 3-year-old colt in the 60-year history of Scarborough Downs. The sophomore son of Computer Scooter, ably piloted by leading driver Shawn Gray, made every pole a winning one in his record-breaking circumnavigation of Scarborough’s historic half mile oval on Sunday (8/29) timed in 1:56 flat; thereby shaving 3/5 of a second off the longstanding benchmark established by LLYR during the 2006 season. New Track Record for Barbra Ann

Barbra Ann continues to enjoy rock-star status at the raceway this season as the rookie Maine-bred extended her unbeaten streak at Scarborough Downs on Friday (8/27) with driver Kevin Switzer calling the shots.
Stakes Action at the Downs!

Driver Heath Campbell held the hot hand at the Downs on Thursday (8/26), winning five races from the 11-race program, including a Maine Sire Stakes event with Pembroke Earl (above), owned by William Varney of Bangor and trained by Valerie Grondin. Other stakes winners on the program included Cranmeadow Express with his 8th consecutive win in the colt division, and Iza Bella (Ivan Davies) and Delta Dream (Irv Mauran), in the 2-year-old filly divisions.

Andrew Harrington aboard #3 Artillery Officer (on right) gives brother Steve Nason, aboard #1 Ataboy Bubba, a surprised smile as Nason flies past him in the final stretch in race 6 on Saturday (8/21). No Jokin' is still serious!

No Jokin' a 6-year-old gelding, owned by Kevin Gee of Falmouth and trained by Randy Bickmore, is still serious about getting to the winner's circle, and he did it again in the feature (with driver Drew Campbell) at Scarborough Downs on Friday (8/20). A cinch for Cincy Maynard and Shane Taggart

Another one for the record books!

Rodeo Du Ruisseau, an 8-year-old gelding owned by Sharon Spaulding and trained by Richard Robertson, Sr., set a new track record for a huge crowd to see on Joseph Ricci Memorial day, Saturday, Aug. 14th. The 1:54.0 clocking (with driver Drew Campbell) was a new track record for aged geldings, previously held by Ideal Conditions (1:54.1). On a Wing and a Prayer: Pembroke Prayer Defeates Enough Talk in Ricci Memorial

Pembroke Prayer posted an upset of Biblical proportions on Saturday at Scarborough Downs, defeating World Champion, Enough Talk in the $50,000 Joseph Ricci Memorial Invitational. Read the release.

It was our hometown girl, Charlene Cushing aboard Seein Stars, an 11-year-old mare oned by Adrian Wisher, of Townsend, DE, who was the winner in the first division of the Mildred Williams International Driving Series on Sunday (8/8) during Family Fun Day. Driver Anita Valstad of Norway was the winner in the second division. Lady driver purse money and raffle proceeds are being donated to the Ribbons for Ribbons charity for breast cancer research. John Nason: Mr. 2000!

Driver John Nason became the latest incarnation of "Mr. 2000" on Friday (August 6), securing his 2000th driving victory at Scarborough Downs as he steered Early Connection down victory lane. The second-generation horseman, and son of famed driver Arthur Nason, basked in the celebration as he was joined trackside by fellow drivers and trainers, including his son, 3rd generation and up and coming star, Steve Nason. Winning Dinning is back!

Maine Sire Stakes Action! Cranmeadow Express, the 2-year-old gelding trotter owned and trained by top Trot Master, Paul Battis, was poised in the fast lane on Thursday afternoon at Scarborough Downs as the trotting prodigy remains undefeated in stakes competition this year. Maine Sire Stakes races return to the Downs on Friday afternoon with the 2-year-old pacing division, and features undefeated fillies Barbra Ann and Maeve. Post time is 4 pm. Come on Downs(s)!
TheNor'easterBeast on a Rampage!

TheNor’easterBeast continued to terrorize the 2-year-old colt division of the Maine Standardbred Breeders Stakes races, scoring his third consecutive stakes victory at Scarborough Downs on Sunday (7/25).

Mystical Delight, 4-year-old gelding owned by Kevin Gee of Falmouth, secured his 10th lifetime win at the Downs during the $8,000 Free-for-All pace on Saturday (7/24). No Jokin' is a serious (big) winner!

The crowd simply loves when No Jokin' steps on the racetrack - not only is he giant in stature (one of the biggest Standardbreds we've seen), but he always puts on a great show. The 6-year-old gelding, owned by Kevin Gee of Falmouth and trained by Randy Bickmore (driven by Drew Campbell), enjoyed a trip to the Winner's Circle on Friday (7/23), the 15th win of his career. Doubleshotascotch roared into action at Scarborough Downs on Saturday (July 10), fresh from back-to-back lifetime bests at Pocono Downs, and wasted little time in serving notice that he would become a key contender in the Mid-Summer Classic Pacing Series, winning the 3rd elimination leg on Saturday (7/10). Conditioned out of the Valerie Grondin stable and driven by Heath Campbell, Doubleshotascotch blazed around the Seaside Oval in 1:54.3, equaling the second-fastest mile paced this season in the State of Maine. Freshman Fillies Debut at Scarborough

The Maine Sire Stakes returned to Scarborough Downs on Friday (7/2), showcasing the 2-year-old filly pacing division, three splits of fillies racing for purses in excess of $28,000. Twenty-six rookie fillies came to the raceway but only three could parade victorious. Maeve (above) along with Barbra Ann, hailed from the powerful KDK Standardbreds stable, giving driver/trainer Kevin Switzer double the pleasure in the star-studded stakes program.
The Man in Orange and Black is Back!

Driver Drew Campbell is back! After a 3 month absence, driver Drew Campbell showed no signs of rust whatsoever and scored a GRAND SLAM performance with 4 driving wins on the day's 8-race card on Thursday (7/1)! Shady Sabrina, the Queen of the Local Scene, has now captured three consecutive Free-for-All contests Scarborough Downs. On Saturday (6/26), the 8-year-old mare claimed victory in the $10,000 opening leg of the Mid-Summer Classic Pacing Series (with Kevin Switzer), besting a stellar field of accomplished stallions and geldings. Davis of Portland enjoyed their day at the races on Thursday (6/24) -- they had their annual Summer Outing at the track, complete with a delicious catered meal and a trip out to the Winner's Circle! Kerogen: King of the Downs

Kerogen hit the highway and never looked back on Friday (6/18), fronting all comers twice around the half-mile oval and stopping the teletimer in a seasonal best in 1:58.4, just 1/5th of a second off of his own track record for aged stallions which he set, and then equaled, in 2008.

It was a good day for driver Kevin Switzer, who not only won 3 of the "baby races" (2-year-olds out on the track for their first time racing), but he had 3 wins on the live race card on Thursday (6/17). A Day of Excitement and Remembrances

It was a day full of racing excitement and moving tributes on Sunday (5/30) at Scarborough Downs: First, we welcomed the gentleman of the CKG Billings Amateur Driving Series, harness racing's "greatest traveling road show," which made a stop at the Downs as part of its New England circuit. Billings veteran driver Stephen Oldford, 3rd from right, was the winner of Race 2 with Lucky Strike. Next stop: Plainridge Race Course. Congrats, guys! Driver Shawn Gray celebrated career victory #2000 on Saturday (5/29). He sealed the deal driving Kevin Gee's latest import, Pictonian Leo in Race 8. Gray also claimed victory in the Dirigo Pacing Series $12,000 final - not as driver but as trainer - with Franco Catapult N. Ron Cushing Hits Career Win #1500

Driver Ron Cushing, the "Man in Maroon and Gold" celebrated his 1500th career win with his Scarborough Downs fans during the races on Friday, May 28. His Dad, Rick Cushing, in the red cap, also joined in the celebration, along with fellow Driver Shaw Gray and other friends, including Laura Searway and her marshal horse, Poco (behind the crowd)! Driver Shawn Gray is hot right now! Not only did he have 4 wins on the day's card on Saturday (5/22) at Scarborough Downs but he continued his dominating performance in the Dirigo Pacing Series, claiming victory in both divisions of the second elimination leg. Gray has won all five elimination legs, and will hope to complete his Dirigo mastery next Saturday, May 29th, as the $12,000 final is contested (post time: 4 pm). Congrats, Shawn! Driver Shawn Gray cemented his lead atop the the Scarborough Downs driver's standings on Saturday with a six-win performance, giving him 35 seasonal wins. Steve Nason follows in his father's "hoofprints" as dad, John Nason, shows he still can teach a thing or two: The elder Nason won with #1, My Best Gal, a 4-year-old mare owned by David Campbell of Augusta, ME and Andrew Harrington of Freedom, NH, in race 5 on Friday (5/14). Driver Shawn Gray was back in action on the racetrack on Sunday (5/9) with four wins on the day's card, placing him at the top of the Scarborough Downs drivers leaderboard with 26 wins so far this season. In Race 5 it was with Pansy (pictured), a 12-year-old bay mare, owned and trained by Jon Chenard of Saco. And Scarborough Downs said Happy Mother's Day to all the moms at the track by dedicating Race 11 to them with The Mother's Day Pace, in which Shawn Gray was also victorious with American Village. Charlize returned to Scarborough Downs on Friday (4/30), the site of some of her biggest triumphs, proving once again that the “Horses for Courses” theory remains one of the handicappers’ best friends.
Switzer Secures Six on Saturday at Scarborough

The mix and match six-pack of wins included two from Switzer’s own stable; one of which was with six-year-old Roman Conqueror N (above). Six is obviously his lucky number today! Par One, the classy 14-year-old Claiming Trotter of the Year for 2009, (owned and trained by Jon Chenard and driven by Shawn Gray), made a great first start of the year on Sunday (April 11) with a win in Race 9. Off to a great start!

My Gift To You, a 4-year-old pacing horse, owned by Big Dom Racing Stable LLC of Cohoes, NY, and trained and driven by Ron Cushing, raced the fastest mile of the young 2010 season with a time of 1:56.2 in the feature race on Saturday (April 10). The Ron Cushing stable has been doing very well so far this season with many of his entries either taking the win or the show spot since opening weekend. Three wins on Saturday alone! NY Invader Bests Maine's Best

Three-time State of Maine Trotter of the Year, Kerogen, gave his all on Easter Sunday (4/4) but it was not enough to overcome the powerful emergence of a brand-new force: Tsarina, a 6-year-old NY-bred mare, owned by George Resta of Annapolis, MD, and trained and driven by Ron Cushing.
